‘Child’s Play’ Director Lars Klevberg Shares Storyboards and Insights for a Couple Teaser Trailer Moments

The teaser trailer for director Lars Klevberg‘s Child’s Play hit the net this past Friday, and though it didn’t actually give us a good look at the new Chucky, it did preview a couple of big set-piece moments. In one of them, Aubrey Plaza’s character looks to be the latest victim on Chucky’s chopping block, as her young son Andy Barclay looks on in horror.
Over on Instagram, Klevberg shared some storyboards from this sequence, along with insights.
He wrote, “When dealing with sequences containing action, stunts, SFX, animatronics and kids, proper planning is essential to get what you want/need. From the teaser you saw a couple of shots from a pretty intense sequence. From one line in the script the process for a couple of shots is planning and discussions, followed by a detailed design of the scene that goes trough at least 4 stages before captured in-camera. I knew Aubrey was a great actress and superb in capturing the essence of the character, and her improv is on another level, but her physical abilities and her way of taking physical direction was very, very impressive. The same goes to the incredible Gabriel, who of course loved doing stuff like this.”
“KatzSmith (producers), fresh from IT, was adamant on prepping everything as much as possible,” Klevberg continued. “For colours, there’s some significant differences in those two shots for a reason, well executed by @brendanuegama who was the DP on this. When time given I’ll try sharing some [behind the scenes] stuff.”

In Klevberg’s modern take on the horror classic, a mother (Aubrey Plaza) gives her son (Gabriel Bateman) a Buddi dolls for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.
Child’s Play slashes its way to theaters on June 21, 2019.
